The Plan · Future vision
The Listening Place.
The Listening Place is our vision for a permanent home: a beautifully considered room where music is worth settling in for.
A future home for The Listening Project. No location or opening date is confirmed. The name would carry its city, for example The Listening Place of Sarasota or The Listening Place of Venice.

An everyday
pleasure.
Come in for a record and a coffee. Find something in the sleeve notes that sends you down a new path. Return that evening for a closer listen with us.
That is the life we imagine for the room. Welcoming in the daytime, absorbing during one of our listening programs, and comfortable enough to make staying a habit. Careful acoustics and high-quality playback would serve both.
It would also be a place where people who wouldn’t otherwise meet end up in the same room: a retiree and a college student at the same table, a collector and someone hearing a record for the first time.

The Library
A physical collection is part of our vision for the Place: records alongside music writing, artist biographies, sleeve notes and artwork. It could support the Library program format, which can also travel to partner venues. Follow a lyric into the book that inspired it, or trace a sound back to the records that came before.
We’ll draw from the collection for our programs and make room for people to spend time with it on their own. We’d love to build it with people who have collections and stories worth sharing.
Contribute knowledge or a collectionHow it would sustain itself
A lasting place needs a living rhythm.
The Project and the Place are one nonprofit vision. Ticketed programs would deliver the mission directly. Memberships, private events, and everyday hospitality could help support the people and space that make the work possible.
Community support would help develop education programs and widen access. Each part needs an honest budget, including paid preparation and operating costs. We’ll test demand and income through our first events before committing to a permanent home.
How it would be structured
The nonprofit
The Listening Project of Southwest Florida would own the Place and run everything that serves the mission: programs, The Listening Lab, a music collection and memberships tied to programs. Donations and grants support this side only.
The hospitality side
A café or bar and private rentals would be run by a separate company owned by the nonprofit. It would carry its own licenses, pay its own taxes and send what it earns back to the mission. Final structure is subject to legal and tax review.
We won’t sign a lease until we have a feasible site, committed capital and a reviewed cash-flow plan. See the roadmap.
Questions
How does hospitality fit?
A café or beverage offering is part of the future vision, including the possibility of alcohol at appropriate adult gatherings. Alcohol-free choices and clearly separated arrangements for youth programs belong in that plan. The final offering must suit the programming and sustain its own costs.

Know a room with potential?
We’re looking in downtown Sarasota and the Rosemary District, as well as downtown Wellen Park and Venice, with outreach programs across Charlotte County. Character, good listening conditions, and a walkable neighborhood matter more than a conventional venue label.
