Get involved

Build something worth gathering for.

The Listening Project needs people with something to share and people who can help it last. Contribute to the programs, build a partnership, or help guide the organization.

Ways to contribute

A contribution can take many forms.

Host an evening

Offer a suitable space or underwrite its use. A gallery, community room, or hospitality venue with a strong local following could give the first programs a welcoming home.

More detail

Libraries, record stores and empty storefronts work too. A storefront could host a multi-week residency. We bring the sound system, the guide and the audience; you bring the room.

Put good equipment to work

Lend or donate hi-fi playback, recording, or AV equipment. Tell us the model and condition, and whether you have a loan or gift in mind. We’ll agree care and return arrangements before accepting a loan.

More detail

Records, music books and artwork for our developing collection are welcome too. We’ll document every loan and gift and credit it the way you prefer.

Back a program

Support a specific program, an educator’s preparation, or affordable admission. We’ll develop a clear scope and budget with you, and agree how your contribution will be acknowledged.

What support could cover
  • Access seats for one program
  • A guide’s preparation and fee
  • A six-week Teen Lab cycle
  • A full program

We’ll share the cost of each as pilot budgets are set, and report on what each contribution made possible.

Partner through your business

An audio specialist could help with system design. A local business could underwrite a program or introduce a venue partner. We welcome partnerships that add something useful to the experience while respecting its educational independence.

Programs

Develop a program.

Bring a record, a question, or a story you know well. We’ll work together on the listening selections and a format that lets others follow it. A background in teaching helps, but knowledge can also come from years of making music, researching it, or being there.

A music educator could make harmony audible without a theory lesson. Someone who worked around an artist could illuminate a recording’s history. A writer or visual artist could open up the lyrics or the world of the sleeve.

We also want collaborators who can adapt this work for younger listeners, and turn a strong first program into material we can revisit and adapt for new audiences.

Tell us: what you’d like to explore, your connection to it, and who you think would enjoy it. A short note and links to relevant work are enough to start.

Partners

A partnership with purpose.

We’re interested in working with educators, cultural organizations, and local businesses whose work can strengthen the experience or make it easier to take part. A useful partnership starts with what we can create together.

Kinds of partnership

Season partner

Supports a full season of programs. Recognized across the site, at every program and in the Season Learning Report.

Venue partner

Hosts programs or a residency. Recognized on every listing at your venue, with a link to you.

Education partner

A school, college, library or youth organization that co-presents the Listening Lab or free programs.

Program partner

Underwrites a single program or series. Recognized at that program and on its listing.

In-kind partner

Contributes equipment, services, records, printing or hospitality. Recognized as you prefer.

Community partner

A neighborhood group, record store or organization that helps us reach new listeners.

Partners are acknowledged by name and logo with a link. Our programming stays educationally independent: partners don’t choose content, and acknowledgment is not an endorsement of products or services.

Crew

Make the room work.

A good evening begins well before anyone takes a seat. Audio engineers and AV technicians can help us hear the details. People with production or hospitality experience can make arrival, setup, and the evening itself feel easy.

Let us know what you do well and when you’re available. We’ll discuss the role, time, and any pay or volunteer arrangement before work begins.

Well-being

Music and well-being.

We welcome licensed mental-health counselors, board-certified music therapists, and researchers who want to help shape evidence-informed programming. There is room to contribute to program design as well as guidance on trauma-informed facilitation.

That includes the Retreat, programs built around what sound does for the body and for a room full of people.

Tell us about your credentials and the kind of collaboration you’re interested in. Our current programs are educational; any future clinical service would need appropriate professional leadership and a clearly defined scope.

Please use the inquiry form for professional introductions, without client information or medical histories.

Board

Steward the idea.

We’re welcoming expressions of interest in board service. Help establish responsible oversight and the relationships that let a cultural organization last. Experience in nonprofit leadership, finance, education, or local partnerships is especially relevant.

Choose “Board interest” on the form and tell us about your background, connection to the mission, and availability. You can include a link to your résumé or professional profile.

Future paid openings will be posted here with responsibilities and application details. No paid vacancies are currently advertised.
